Catawba
My name is Kenneth Poston, my mother is Cherokee, and my father is Catawba. I am last in line to carry on the family name, so heritage and family is very important to me. My paternal grandpa was raised as an orphan on the Catawba Indian reservation between Toad Harris’s household and his aunt Estelle’s. My grandpa met his Cherokee wife through the connections that formed between the two tribes when the Catawba lived in Haywood County, NC. Some of these close family connections still exist today. Cherokee
My maternal lines are the Southern Cherokee whose ancestors consist of the descendants of Charlie Reece (Tsali), Sarah Standard, Rattling Gourd, and the Cherokee Emory families. These four primary family groups suffered great losses during the Trail of Tears, earning them the right to stay east of the Mississippi. My family claims no relationship to the EBCI who segregated themselves from the tribe prior to removal. You can find more information on my family’s Cherokee connections here.
